We at Bit.Shes got a chance to connect with brilliantly talented poet and author Imani Tolliver to talk about her NFT Poem, artistic inspirations, advice for new poets, and more! We are beyond excited to be featuring Imani’s art and poetry in our gallery, as her work is a gift. Check out the Q&A below!

Q: We are lucky to have your poem, “Pure”, as an NFT Poem in our gallery, as well as NFTs showcasing your incredible visual artwork. You are clearly extremely talented in a variety of mediums. Does one artistic medium speak to you more than another? Does it depend on the month, week, day?

A: I’m thrilled to be a part of the Bit.Shes family of artists and makers! My poetry and art are intertwined - each compliments the other. When words elude me, I create a collage. With each placement of paper, the sorting of images settles my thoughts, creating a pathway to the story that I want to tell through poetry.

Q: Do you have any words of advice for a new poet just starting out on their creative path?

A: Write purely, personally. Tell the truth, always. Write the poems that frighten you, record the daily walk of your life - the triumphs and challenges - with specificity and fearlessness. Listen, observe, and record. Explore the work of celebrated artists and your contemporaries. Find poets (and writers of various disciplines) to connect with; build community, but maintain your own voice. Be precise in your editing. Share your poems with a few friends, on stages, in workshops. Submit your poems for publication. Expect nothing, but dream of everything. You are a part of something big; you are not alone. Always remember that.

Q: Is there something you’re currently working on that you’re particularly excited about? How can people get involved or stay tuned for it?

A: I’m currently working on several projects. Whether it’s curating poetry readings, art exhibitions, teaching writing/art workshops, public speaking, or producing events, I enjoy partnering with a host of organizations and institutions. The best way to stay tuned is through my website: ImaniTolliver.com

Many thanks to Imani Tolliver for taking the chance to speak with us. We encourage everyone to support her work both in our gallery and through checking out her website!
